Leatherhead Leisure Centre
Client: Mole Valley District Council & Volker Fitzpatrick
Location: Leatherhead, Surrey
Value: £12 million
Contract: Design and Build
Jubb provided full civil and structural design services for the £12m extension and refurbishment of Leatherhead Leisure Centre. Work at the existing 1970s centre included a new two-storey extension with crèche and soft play areas at ground level and gymnasium and fitness suites above.
Key architectural features are the access ‘bridges’ floating over the entrance foyer and the main ‘waveform’ roof above. All plan bracing is concealed within the eaves and gable overhangs provide a clean internal appearance and express the main structural form.
The waves leading edge projects over three metres beyond the building line supported on slender ‘chopstick’ columns. The project also included re-configuring load bearing walls to create family friendly changing areas and a full refurbishment of the three pools together with a new squash hall, refurbishment of two conference suites and an external Multi Use Games Area (MUGA).
The works were carried out over four phases, keeping the centre operational at all times.
